The Basilica

Mary, Help of Christians

The Shrine of Mary Help of Christians was born from the courage of Don Bosco and his great devotion to Our Lady. It is the heart of Salesian work. It is the place of the educational and spiritual maturity of the saint of young people. It contains the bodies of Don Bosco, of Santa Maria Domenica Mazzarello, co-founder with Don Bosco of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, of San Domenico Savio, and of the blessed salesians.

It was a task marked by extraordinary events and enormous difficulties: Don Bosco never tired of repeating that it was the Madonna who wanted the church and she herself, after having even indicated to him the place where it was supposed to rise, would also have found the necessary means .

History

The Salesin “Holy Land”

Here at Valdocco Don Bosco begins to transform “wolves into lambs”. A project that finds its first home in “Casa Pinardi”, then all over the world. The wolves, after having become lambs, are transformed into “pastors”: some of his first boys become Salesians. From Valdocco the educational ideal of Don Bosco is transformed into apostolic holiness. It is the heart of the Salesian work: from the humble roof of Casa Pinardi to the building of the Basilica in the place indicated by the Madonna. In addition to Don Bosco, Dominic Savio, Michele Rua, Maria Domenica Mazzarello, the benefactors and collaborators of the Salesian work of the origins are especially remembered here.
